Is Your Cyber Security Spending Proactive or Reactive?

    By Anistar Technologies | Employers, Security | Comments are Closed | 11 October, 2018 | 1

Every company operates on a budget, even though some companies spend their money more loosely than others. One major component for any budget today has to focus on cyber security. With the amount of data breaches and cyber security attacks happening every day, it’s not worth the risk to brush off the need for cyber security spending. But there’s also a line to be drawn as to whether your spending is more proactive or reactive. Both are equally important and should be treated as such. Here are some considerations to make when it comes to cyber security spending in your organization.

The Truth About Cyber Security Insurance

Anyone with a cyber security career will say insurance is important, but it shouldn’t be what companies spend all of their money on. While you will pay for the insurance upfront, it’s considered to be a reactive approach since it doesn’t do anything to protect you from the cyber attacks occurring. In fact, many times these insurance companies will require organizations to prove they took the necessary steps to protect themselves from cyber attacks before they pay out any settlements. So in a way, the proactive measures you take to protect your organization are more valuable than reactive spending on cyber security insurance.

Cyber Security Spending Will Continue Increasing

More companies are allocating money in their budget towards hiring professionals for cyber security positions. This is a proactive spending approach, since you’re relying on the professional to get ahead of any attacks and prevent data breaches from occurring. A significant portion of data breaches occur when companies don’t update their IT security software frequently enough. A cyber security professional can always ensure this software is updated so you’re better protected upfront.

Blending Proactive And Reactive Spending is Ideal

While proactive spending sounds better, it’s actually important to incorporate a blend of proactive and reactive spending in your cyber security strategy. This could involve employee education for cyber security, risk assessments, vulnerability testing, network monitoring, disaster recovery and more. When you are well-rounded with your cyber security procedures and protocols, you’ll have a much better chance of preventing a disaster in the event of a cyber attack.
