How to Shift Your General IT Career to Cyber Security

By Anistar Technologies | Careers, Employee Resources, Security, Technology | Comments are Closed | 16 October, 2018 | 1

As technology continues to evolve, so do the skills of IT professionals. If you’re an IT expert and are looking for a different opportunity, you may consider entering the world of cyber security. The truth is there’s a shortage of qualified experts, so many cyber security positions go unfilled. However, with a solid general IT background, you could put yourself on the fast track to becoming qualified and shifting your career focus. Here’s how to most effectively take advantage of the cyber security opportunities available.

    Get A Formal Education

There was a time not too long ago where IT experts didn’t need a college degree, but relied on experience instead. But with the demand for IT security jobs today, employers want to at least see that you have a college degree in hand. If you’ve worked in general IT for a while and don’t see a benefit in going back to college to get a degree, then it may be worth it to pursue various certifications focused on cyber security to help you gain knowledge.

    Experience is Most Important

Experience can come in many different forms. You could work on your own projects, take hands-on courses, volunteer and more. Almost all available cyber security positions will require at least some experience, so any way you can get it will be beneficial. There aren’t necessarily any entry level cyber security positions, since most employers expect you to have extensive experience when you apply.

Specialize in One Area of Cyber Security

As a general IT professional, you may have a wide range of skills and experience. However, the cyber security industry is a bit different in a sense that most employers want people to master a certain aspect. Consider what you’re best at right now for the easiest transition. For example, if you’re highly skilled in website development, you could look into website security to provide a smoother transition and open up more cyber security opportunities for you.

    Master General IT Skills

A large percentage of cyber security professionals are masters when it comes to general IT knowledge. While you need to focus your attention on one aspect of cyber security, it’s important to know everything you possibly can about information technology in general. This will look better on a resume and you’ll qualify for many more cyber security positions as a result.

Anistar Technologies can help general IT professionals determine how their current skill sets can translate to the cyber security industry. We have access to a wide variety of cyber security opportunities for various levels of expertise. Our job is to work with both candidates and employers to ensure the best fit possible. To get started transitioning into the cyber security industry in the most effective and efficient way possible, contact us today.
